Poem "But Me" by Jane Roth
A pandemic they said,
Haven’t you heard?
I thought to myself,
What is that word.
So, I looked it up,
A disease the book said,
That spreads a continent,
And leaves so many dead.
I said to myself
It’s a world away
And everyone else
Is till at work and at play.
But it kept coming,
From Europe to U.K.
But still, for me
It’s too far away.
But then came Quebec,
And then to Ontario
But this is Manitoba,
We’re clean, we’ll adjust.
But then we were caught,
With this terrible disease
That affects so many loved ones
Of you and of me.
No work and no play
And no going out
Don’t do the wrong things
If you are in doubt.
No more embracing
No more love
And really, just tell me,
What is a virtual hug?
We are Canadians,
We kiss and we hug,
We’re toughie feelie people
Just full of so much love.
But here we are now,
Almost a year has past,
Who would have thought
That it ever would last.
But we’re tough and strong
We’re close and we’ll fight
To control this disease
With all of our might.
So I say to you all
As best as I can
Remember that Canada
It’s still a great land.
We’ll love each other
And hold on tight
And try very hard
With all of your might.
If we all do our part
It will certainly be
A very good start
To end this disease.
For I know in my heart
We’ll again be so pleased
With a great big hug
And a breathtaking squeese.
